That’s not a complaint about content moderation. That’s a preview.
Murphy is treating a temporary platform glitch as something that will require official punishment once Democrats have the power to hand out the punishments.

None of that mattered. The senator saw an opportunity to signal that private companies better stay in line or face the consequences after the midterms.
This is the same Chris Murphy who spent years treating social media moderation as a public service whenever it targeted the other side. Stories got buried, accounts got throttled, and legitimate debate got labeled dangerous with his quiet approval or active encouragement.
Now that a left-wing organizing page hits a temporary snag, the rules have changed. Suddenly moderation is an outrage that demands a future congressional investigation. The inconsistency isn’t subtle. No Kings spent the day telling the country that no one is above accountability and that Trump must be stopped from acting like a king. Murphy’s contribution to the effort was to threaten Meta with the full weight of a Democratic Congress if the company doesn’t manage its systems in a way that keeps the protests running smoothly.
That’s not defending free speech. That’s demanding special treatment and promising consequences for anyone who fails to provide it.
Americans have watched this pattern for years. Speech is protected when it advances the preferred narrative and a problem to be solved when it doesn’t. Platforms are free to moderate until the moderation inconveniences the right people, at which point the investigations get scheduled. Murphy didn’t hide the threat. He put it in writing and dared anyone to notice. The January list is growing. Every company, every official, and every private citizen who steps out of line is being told exactly what happens if Democrats win.
Murphy just made sure Meta understands its already on it.
