Watching David Crowley try to answer a basic question about abortion limits felt like sitting through a masterclass in political dodge ball. A reporter laid it out cleanly: your opponent says you want unlimited abortion access all nine months. Crowley shot back that it was not true. Fair enough on the surface. Then came the follow-up that should have been straightforward for anyone running for governor.

What is the cutoff for you? The response? “I don’t know anything.”

Watch:

That is not a nuanced position. That is a candidate who has spent the final stretch of the Wisconsin race calling for a constitutional amendment that would enshrine a “fundamental right” to reproductive decisions, including abortion, and then freezes when asked where any line exists.

He has talked about keeping politicians out of the exam room and leaving it to women and their doctors. He has framed it as protecting his daughters’ rights.

What he has not done is name a single gestational limit, viability standard, or restriction he would accept.

When pressed on the current 20-week law, the pattern is the same. Defer, deflect, move on.

Crowley is the one who voted against requiring care for a baby born alive. He is the one who co-authored language declaring abortion healthcare. He is the one now pushing language that would likely wipe out the existing limits and put viability calls entirely in the hands of providers with no clear guardrails. Claiming “it’s not true” that he supports access through nine months does not land when the actual policy he wants would remove the state’s ability to set any meaningful cutoff at all.

Wisconsin voters have a 20-week ban on the books right now, with exceptions for the life or health of the mother. Most people understand that as a reasonable line. Crowley will not say whether he would keep it, scrap it, or replace it with anything specific. “I don’t know anything” is not an answer. It is an admission that the candidate does not want to give one.

With the election weeks away, that silence is the position.
