Oh, look who's scrambling like a quarterback on fourth and long—ESPN, the once-mighty sports empire that's hemorrhaged 40 million cable subscribers over the past decade, translating to a jaw-dropping $10 billion in annual lost revenue, is now desperately hawking a $29.99-per-month direct-to-consumer streaming service in a Hail Mary bid to staunch the bleeding. But let's be real: after years of shoving woke politics down viewers' throats—alienating die-hard fans who want to watch the game without a side of virtue-signaling sermons—who's actually going to pony up for this overpriced lifeline when the network's brand is as tarnished as a participation trophy?
Clay Travis really summed everything up perfectly in his thread about the new streaming service.
ESPN has lost 40 million cable subscribers in the past decade, that’s $10 billion a year in lost revenue. The Hail Mary solution? A new $29.99 a month streaming @espn. But is there a market for it? Nope. A deep dive on the collapse of cable sports & ESPN: https://t.co/jetTbRmIe4

They've lost FORTY MILLION cable subscribers.
Wow.
ESPN’s entire future as a business comes down to one question how much lower will the cable and satellite subscriber numbers go? Based on their expenses on games, they could start losing money in a hurry. It’s desperation time in Bristol. https://t.co/jetTbRng3C

Bigly.
BTW, there isn’t much woke politics discussion in here — mostly straight business — but I do think the far left wing politics crushes the brand, which makes people far less likely to be willing to pay $29.99 a month for the streaming service. https://t.co/jetTbRmIe4

Here is where I disagree with Clay a bit. ESPN went woke years ago and started pissing off their viewers long before woke actually became a thing. And while he's definitely spot on with the actual business side of this, I know members of my family stopped watching years ago because they insisted on making things political, especially some of their talking heads.
I also have to add that ESPN's relationship with the WWE and their pay-per-views is only making wrestling fans angry because once again they're being charged even more to watch their favorite shows.
Not a great look, guys. At all.
