Megyn Kelly spent the morning after the midterms telling Republicans the voters had just told them to go to hell because the party betrayed them. The GOP is in ruins, she said!
That take might land harder if she hadn’t spent the better part of the last year (or more?) doing her own version of the same thing. For a long stretch she was all-in on the Trump agenda and the voters who delivered it. Then the Israel question heated up, Tucker Carlson started openly questioning whether the party was even worth supporting, and Candace Owens went further still.
Kelly didn’t push back.
She platformed the skepticism, defended the right to keep going, and treated anyone who expected her to draw a line as the real problem. She floated the idea that a growing wing of the right felt the way Tucker did about the party’s stance, and she made it clear she had no interest in separating herself from any of it.
How ironic that she herself is the actual puppet.
Watch:
Megyn Kelly opens her show with a blunt message for the GOP after its midterm wipeout. Voters said: “F*CK OFF! You have betrayed us!” She says the GOP “is in ruins, and maybe it needed to be.” Her advice to Republicans: grow a spine and “not just be puppets of Trump’s.” https://t.co/mybegSqmVO

Now the same audience she helped move is being blamed for the wipeout, and the party she spent months signaling it was fine to leave is the one that needs to “grow a spine.” The timing is convenient. When the coalition was winning, the skepticism stayed mostly off-camera or carefully hedged. Once the returns came in and the booking calendar still needs filling, the lecture arrives fully formed and aimed squarely at everyone else.
Is there a sleazier opportunist in politics?

Nope. Well, maybe Tucker and Candace, but its close.
Let's be honest, voters did punish Republicans. A lot of them had watched the same shift Kelly amplified and decided the party no longer prioritized what they cared about. Pretending the only betrayal happened on Election Day, while ignoring the year of audience-building that preceded it, is just another version of the grift. The base noticed who was willing to ride the wave until it got messy.
They’re noticing who’s ready to jump ship the second it costs.
