Mark Ruffalo went after Elon Musk this past weekend. He must have been bored or something ...
The actor, never one to pass up a chance to lecture the rest of us on taxes, oversight, and what “democracy” supposedly requires, decided Musk was crashing out because he doesn’t want to pay more. Standard fare from that corner of Hollywood. What stood out wasn’t the usual wealth-shaming. It was the reply that landed underneath it from a fellow SAG-AFTRA member who actually knows how the union math works.
Turns out the dues that fund healthcare and other member support are capped once an actor’s covered earnings hit $1 million. Anything above that line? Optional. High earners keep the rest. So while Ruffalo is out here demanding more accountability from other people’s fortunes, the system he belongs to already lets him (and plenty of other A-listers) stop contributing at a level that would actually move the needle for the working actors who keep the industry running. The same people who talk the loudest about solidarity are the ones whose contracts and union rules quietly protect the top of the ladder.
Angela Belcamino absolutely let him HAVE IT.
Mark Ruffalo, I’m in SAG-AFTRA just like you. Our union dues are capped at the first $1 million in covered earnings. That means high earners like yourself don’t pay work dues on earnings above that amount. Why not voluntarily contribute more to help fellow actors who are struggling to afford healthcare and make ends meet? You’re criticizing Elon Musk over wealth, taxes and accountability. Maybe start by looking at the system you benefit from. Sound familiar?

I keep coming back to the simple question she put out there: if the people making millions a year are serious about looking out for everyone else in the union, why not put more money into the pot voluntarily? The math isn’t complicated. Remove the cap, or just decide the extra is worth it, and you could expand the safety net that actually shows up during strikes or when healthcare costs spike.
Instead we get another round of someone with a big platform telling everyone else how the game should be played while the rules that benefit them stay untouched. This is the part that never gets old. The lectures about taxes and “paying your fair share” almost always come from people whose own professional structures already limit how much they have to chip in. It’s easy to demand more from billionaires you’ve never met. It’s a little harder when the suggestion lands on the same paycheck that just got a studio bonus.
Funny how that works.
