Just months into her term as Virginia’s first female governor, Abigail Spanberger is proving why voters should think twice about handing power to former CIA operatives who campaign as moderates but govern like thin-skinned authoritarians. The latest lowlight? Spanberger’s team literally kicked two fellow Democrats - state Sens. Mike Jones (D-Chesterfield) and Russet Perry (D-Fairfax) - out of a ceremonial bill signing because they dared attend a 'data center listening tour' organized by Sen. Louise Lucas.
When I first heard this couldn't believe it was true ... but it is.
Instead of celebrating so-called bipartisan or even intra-party wins (which she keeps claiming proves she's a moderate), Spanberger’s office yanked the senators’ bills from the event and had staff escort them into the hallway like rowdy kids sent to the principal’s office. Their crime? Showing up to hear constituents complain about massive data centers gobbling up electricity, dodging taxes, and sticking working Virginians with higher bills.
In Spanberger’s Virginia, listening to voters is apparently a punishable offense if it crosses the wrong corporate donors.
So is owning a firearm, but I digress.
This petty spectacle is just the cherry on top of a growing pile of failures. Spanberger has already vetoed or gutted key Democratic priorities, including collective bargaining rights for public workers, retail cannabis sales, and prescription drug affordability measures - moves that left her own party blindsided and furious. Her sky-high disapproval ratings (which HAVE TO be nearing record territory by now) reflect a governor who talks affordability while protecting Big Tech’s sweetheart deals and pushing gun control that alienates rural and suburban voters.
Virginia deserves better than a governor who treats fellow elected officials like enemies for doing basic constituent service.
Spanberger’s thin-skinned power plays and willingness to kneecap her own party expose the hollowness of her moderate brand. If this is how she handles fellow Democrats, just imagine what she’s got in store for everyone else. Virginians are watching - and the buyer’s remorse is setting in fast.
