Long, long ago (in a galaxy not too far away), when I was working in communications and marketing for a rather large retailer who shall remain nameless, we went through a round of layoffs when another rather LARGE retailer came in and bought the company. They gathered us all together in the gymnasium (yes, this company had a truly amazing campus) and explained that we had been sold to this not only large but super famous retailer, and there would be layoffs. Here's the best part: they told us to go back to our desks and wait for our phones to ring.
If it rang, we were being let go.
Sort of like the world's cruelest gameshow where the winners were losers.
It sucked.
At this time, I was newly pregnant with our first child ... oh, and did I mention my husband and I both worked there? Yeah. It was not great. It was terrifying. Ultimately, I was saved by another department, and my husband's job was fine. Looking back, I don't remember the media making a big deal about us lowly workers in the private industry losing our jobs. I guess they only really care about the entitled federal employees who are still throwing a fit over returning to the office.
