I was scrolling through X the other day when this clip of James Hetfield at Metallica’s Sphere show in Vegas stopped me cold. There he is on stage, thanking the crowd for traveling and spending their money to be there, and then he just says it: Metallica is not here, like some other entertainers, to influence you with their bulls**t. They’re here so people can forget about all the outside crap for a few hours. Love, energy, and heavy music.
That’s the agenda.

We’ve all been to the shows where the singer decides the ticket price includes a political sermon. You paid to hear the songs, not to get lectured about which party is evil this month or which cause you’re required to care about between encores. Half the room is just standing there waiting for the next riff while the other half pretends they’re deeply moved by the TED Talk.
Hetfield’s not interested.
And the timing lands right after Macklemore turned an Ed Sheeran stadium date into a political rally and got himself removed for it.
Hetfield looked at all of that noise and essentially said hard pass. Metallica has stayed pretty consistent about this for years — he’s said before that politics and religion tend to divide people while the music connects them. This was just him saying it out loud to a packed Sphere.
I don’t need my rock stars to be my political guides. Most of us already have opinions. We go to a Metallica show to get out of our own heads for a night, not to have someone else’s worldview handed to us between songs. The man has been in this business long enough to know the difference, and he just reminded everyone else.
So good for him. More artists who treat the stage like a place to play music instead of a pulpit would be a welcome change.
The rest of us can handle the outside world on our own time.
