The D.C. Homicide Rate Is Horrific, and the Reason Why Trump Should Strip It of Home Rule

A couple of days ago, I wrote about the heroism of Ed 'Big Balls' Coristine, the 19-year-old DOGE staffer who recently stood up to a violent gang in Washington, DC, protecting a woman from their attack

Coristine received a brutal beating at the hands of 8-10 thugs (only two of whom have been arrested so far), but his bravery not only saved that woman from the same, it also got the attention of the President. On Aug. 5, Trump spoke out against the lawlessness in the nation's capital and warned of asserting federal control of the city if it didn't get its act together and immediately enact some major crime reforms.

Naturally, this made the left throw another hissy fit, charging that Trump is a 'fascist' and an 'authoritarian tyrant.'

Of course, they are completely ignorant of the fact that the Constitution clearly established DC to be a jurisdiction under federal control. In enumerating the powers of Congress, Article I, Section 8 is pretty explicit about this.

To exercise exclusive legislation in all cases whatsoever, over such District (not exceeding ten miles square) as may, by cession of particular states, and the acceptance of Congress, become the seat of the government of the United States, and to exercise like authority over all places purchased by the consent of the legislature of the state in which the same shall be, for the erection of forts, magazines, arsenals, dockyards, and other needful buildings;

The District of Columbia never had a local government, mayor, or city council until 1973, when President Nixon signed the DC Home Rule Act, one of the few domestic policy mistakes he ever made. For 100 years before that, the city was governed by a three-member commission appointed by the President.

It's been all downhill for DC since 1973. Those old enough will remember how Mayor Marion Barry was caught smoking crack in a hotel room in 1990 and sent to prison for six months. Embarrassingly, DC not only elected him to the city council after he got out, but he was also re-elected as mayor multiple times, all of them landslides.

Countless other DC elected officials have been caught in corruption scandals as well, but the city's biggest shame, at least for the past 40 years, has been crime, particularly violent crime. In the 80s and 90s, DC was the murder capital of the country. Violent crime subsided a bit in the city after that, but has resurged dramatically in recent years, particularly during the regime of the current mayor, Muriel Bowser, who has been in office for a full decade.

Yesterday, in support of Trump's threat to re-federalize DC, Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon showed that DC is not only a disgrace to this country, but an embarrassment of epic proportions on the world stage.

She shared a second chart showing DC's shame in comparison to even more world capitals.

And locals think DC should have statehood? Nope. Not a chance in hell.

Vice President JD Vance wrote a blistering post on X about these horrific statistics.

He's not wrong. TDS and brain worms are so rampant in the Democrat Party, they will ignore the terrifying reality of Washington, DC, and focus only on screeching against the President.

Later, Dhillon also commented from her personal account.

She is absolutely correct.

I live across the river from DC in Northern Virginia, but I enjoy going into the city to see concerts and watch hockey games. (We could have had the NHL in Virginia if not for the fact that state Democrats sabotaged the move of the Washington Capitals just because they hate Glenn Youngkin, but that is a topic for another time.)

I still go into DC for these events, but almost no others. It's simply not worth it. Going into the city at night on a weekend is taking your life in your hands, and that is not hyperbole. Every time that I do it, I see the lawlessness with my own eyes. It is not for a lack of police. DC Metro police are always out on the streets, usually in pretty good numbers, but the policies of Mayor Bowser and the equally corrupt DC City Council under chairman Phil Mendelson have rendered them impotent. They witness violence taking place virtually every night and cannot take much action until after the fact.

Escaping a night in DC unscathed involves keeping as low a profile as possible and keeping your head on a swivel constantly.

Crime has even spread to Georgetown, one of the most elite and protected neighborhoods in the city. During the Biden administration, criminals carjacked a vehicle -- a Secret Service vehicle, no less! -- right outside the home of his granddaughter Naomi in the heart of that elitist enclave. A sitting Congressman, Rep. Henry Cuellar, was also carjacked at gunpoint right next to the U.S. Capitol building.

Oh, by the way, did I mention how much the city stinks? Not figuratively, literally. It REEKS. The stench of marijuana is like a permanent cloud over all areas of DC. It is impossible to avoid the smell even on the Capitol Mall. It might as well be the funk of decay and failure.

DC tried to claim that crime in 2024 hit a 30-year low, but we all know the game Democrats have been playing with these statistics for the past several years. They cite lower crime statistics while omitting the fact that they have simply stopped arresting as many people and stopped reporting violent crimes to federal law enforcement. Sound familiar, Gavin Newsom?

The fact remains that, even with shady reporting from the corrupt local government, there were more than 3,500 instances of violent crime in 2024 and more than 25,000 instances of property crime. And that, they claim, was a 30 percent decrease from the previous year.

The only reason DC has not gotten as much attention for the rampant crime in recent years is not because the city has improved, but because most other Democrat-run cities have sunk to its level.

President Trump and the Republican Congress cannot take direct action against those other cities, but they can in Washington, DC.

The 50-year experiment in DC self-government has been an utter failure, particularly since the 1980s.

It's long past time to end it.

As long as we are returning to the Constitution, let's do that with our once-proud nation's capital.
