I rolled my eyes so hard they nearly stuck that way.

Being a Twitchy editor, this is not the first time this has happened, but still.

Minnesota Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan, running for U.S. Senate, just decided the best closing argument with weeks to go is that it’s time we elect a Native woman.

Identity as the pitch. Not the record. Not the results.

The checkbox.

Sure, representation can matter. But after years as Tim Walz’s number two, Flanagan’s team oversaw one of the most embarrassing fraud explosions in the country. Federal investigators and a House Oversight report laid out hundreds of millions stolen from child nutrition programs and potentially billions more at risk in Medicaid schemes that exploded under their watch. High-risk programs billed tens of billions; prosecutors say a huge chunk was garbage. Whistleblowers and audits were ignored for years. That’s not “speaking in a loud and clear voice.” That’s looking the other way while taxpayers got fleeced.

Meanwhile her household assets jumped from a modest range before she took the lieutenant governor job to well over a million, possibly pushing $2.7 million. Public service paid pretty well while the programs she was supposed to help oversee turned into ATMs for fraudsters.

Michele Tafoya has been pounding this exact point, and surprise: the race is a statistical tie in recent polls. Minnesotans aren’t buying the identity-first sales pitch when their grocery bills are high and the fraud headlines keep coming. They want someone who notices the money disappearing, not someone who changes the subject to ancestry.

I’ve watched this movie before. Candidates who can’t run on competence reach for the identity card. It works until voters remember they still have to live with the consequences. Flanagan can keep talking about history. Voters seem more interested in whether the next senator will actually stop the next billion-dollar heist.

Merit still beats a checkbox.

At least it should.
