The paper had published a piece on Israel’s fury over the Venice prize-winner “NAZA,” the documentary accusing the IDF of treating Palestinian civilian deaths as an acceptable targeting number. Buried in that story was a line that treated October 7 the way a campus seminar treats a feeling: Israelis, the Times informed us, still largely “view themselves” as the victims of that day.

Hamas murdered about 1,200 people and dragged 250 more into Gaza. That is not a self-image. It is a body count.
The sentence sat there anyway, then the blowback arrived, and suddenly we got an editor's note blaming an “editing error.” The paper now says it only meant to describe how Israelis see their government’s war, and that the wording “inadvertently” made the massacre sound optional.
Inadvertently.
As if the so-called smartest newsroom on earth tripped over the difference between a pogrom and a mood.
I have watched this movie before. When the Times gets caught flattening Jewish suffering into “perception,” it does not lead with the correction. It hides the apology on the PR handle, frames it as a copy-desk hiccup, and hopes you will move on to the next Gaza explainer.
Critics immediately asked the obvious follow-up: if the victim line was an accident, what about the rest of the vocabulary?
That is not an editing error. That is the worldview leaking onto the page, then getting walked back once enough people still remember what happened on that Saturday morning.
