BOOHOO! Susan Sarandon Says She's Losing Roles Because She Supports Palestine (Blaming Israel?)

AP Photo/J. Scott Applewhite

I’m supposed to feel sorry for Susan Sarandon.

That’s the assignment Hollywood and its media megaphone handed us: an Oscar winner on a red carpet, sunglasses on, hand over her heart, wants the country to believe she’s a persecuted artist because major studios aren’t lining up to cut her another check.

She says speaking out against Israel has made it “impossible” to get hired. Other outspoken celebrities, she claims, are in the same leaky little boat.

Yeah.

About that.

I have a hard time summoning even the world’s tiniest violin for a wealthy actress who spent years lecturing the rest of us about morality and then acted shocked when the industry she helped politicize finally treated her politics like… politics.

Hollywood spent a decade screaming that speech has consequences. They just didn’t mean THEIR speech.

Sarandon isn’t being disappeared. She isn’t being dragged from her home. She isn’t wondering how to keep the lights on. She’s discovering that studios, donors, and audiences are allowed to decide they don’t want to bankroll someone whose public positions they find repulsive. That’s not a human rights crisis. That’s a marketplace doing what marketplaces do.

And let’s be honest: if the phone stopped ringing because she aged out of the parts she used to book, nobody in that town would admit it. Blaming Israel is a lot more flattering than admitting the industry moved on.

I keep thinking about regular people who actually lose jobs, reputations, and safety for saying the wrong thing in the wrong room. Then I look at a celebrity on a festival carpet playing Joan of Arc.

The contrast is almost comic and sadly funny in an unfunny way.

If this is the price of her convictions, she should own it. That’s what conviction is.

And blaming Israel because she's not getting parts is just the pathetic cherry and has-been sundae that is Susan Sarandon.
