Splinter disappointed in US Holocaust Museum's 'dreadful' intervention into concentration camp debate

As Twitchy reported earlier Monday, the U.S. Holocaust Museum released a statement that didn’t mention any names; it simply asked people not to “create analogies between the Holocaust and other events, whether historical or contemporary.”

The U.S. Holocaust Museum has thus joined other organizations such as the Auschwitz Memorial MuseumYad Vashem, The World Holocaust Remembrance Center, and the Simon Wiesenthal Center in denouncing comparisons of immigrant detention centers at the border to the Holocaust. Dominik Tarcyznski, a member of Poland’s Parliament, invited Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to visit and see Hitler’s worst concentration camps for herself.

Splinter, which describes itself as “news and opinions that get under your skin,” must have thought that the U.S. Holocaust Museum’s statement was the last straw.

Rafi Schwartz writes:

However, in its attempt to portray itself as eminently neutral and above the political discourse of the day, the Holocaust Museum has instead managed to wholly undercut its ostensible reason for existing: Educating the public about the horrors experienced by European Jewry and other marginalized communities, in the hopes of preventing similar atrocities from taking place in the future. But if, as the museum claims, “efforts to create analogies between the Holocaust and other events” are to be unequivocally rejected, then what’s the point of learning about the Holocaust in the first place? As rabbi Danya Ruttenberg succinctly put it last week in the Washington Post: “‘Never Again’ means nothing if Holocaust analogies are always off limits.”

Maybe if there were any comparison to be made — anyone in one of those “concentration camps” is free to return to their home country at any time — he’d have a point. But what about the suddenly relevant Boer War? “As Ocasio-Cortez herself explained, concentration camps are not the sole province of Nazis,” Schwartz writes, echoing so many other journalists who rushed to circle the wagons around the precious once Lynn Cheney spoke up.

That’s exactly what they’re saying. And why it’s almost certain that Ocasio-Cortez hasn’t responded to any of the Jewish groups that sent letters to her office offering to educate her.

Don’t go out of your way looking for it. It lives with Ted Cruz’s Deadspin in that void left after Hulk Hogan sued Gawker Media out of existence.

The only thing drilled into our heads more than the fact that there were concentration camps in the Boer War is that Ocasio-Cortez will never apologize for anything, ever.
