It’s all but certain that Sen. Kamala Harris is going to announce a run for president in 2020, most likely on or around Martin Luther King Jr. Day, but let’s talk about some of the other Democratic candidates for a bit.
Sen. Elizabeth Warren did her “I’m gonna get me a beer” live stream from her kitchen, and The Atlantic jumped in to assure us that folksy “I’m just one of you” phrasing was totally legit considering Warren’s upbringing. Beto O’Rourke decided to Instagram his dental cleaning and now is getting all existential and trying to clear his head for his campaign road trip.
So what is Harris doing to humanize herself? She did a lot of grandstanding during the Brett Kavanaugh hearings, but where’s the softer, more human side to whom we can all relate? Fortunately, CNN is on the case, doing its best to help humanize Harris before her big announcement.

Harris has already opened up a lot of Twitter, where she always seems more concerned with the rights of illegal immigrants than her constituents. But we’re not talking policy here; where’s Harris’s “Slow Jam the News” segment?
…in an age when she might end up competing with Beto O’Rourke and his no-holds-barred Instagram account, Harris loosened up a little — laughing and dancing her way through her playlist for “The Late Show” with Stephen Colbert. There was the song that always makes her dance (A Tribe Called Quest’s “Check the Rhime”); the song that reminds her of her college days at Howard University, (“Push It” by Salt-n-Pepa); and her favorite song from childhood (Aretha Franklin’s “Young, Gifted and Black”).
It was a soft launch for a presidential run that outlined her case to Democratic voters for what makes her unique within a field of presidential candidates, four of whom are likely to be women.
The argument is this: She, as the child of immigrants, who fought her way through the challenges of being a woman of color in politics, to become a prosecutor who would not be bullied, is uniquely positioned to take on President Donald Trump.

This is all a bit meta: we all know that Colbert will host as many Democratic candidates as he can and do his best to humanize them (here he is holding hands with guest and 2020 hopeful Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand), and then CNN will report on what happened on “The Late Show” like it’s newsworthy.
“Like Barack Obama before her, Harris seems poised to channel the desire among voters who want to see America’s diversity once again reflected in the White House (this time by a woman),” CNN reports.
So can we consider this Harris’s “soft launch” of her campaign, and is posting politicians’ Spotify playlists a thing again?

Looks like the media’s got some work to do to get Harris’s numbers up there with O’Rourke’s. Is it too early for Harris to slow jam the news?
