Setting expectations: Rep. Ted Lieu says the Nunes FISA memo is like Al Capone's vault

OK, OK … we get that Democrats are anxious to set expectations for what exactly might be in that classified memo from the House Intelligence Committee, the subject of a #ReleaseTheMemo hashtag campaign.

Members of the House have been allowed to read it, and Republicans were the first to call for its contents to be made public. Rep. Ted Lieu (D-The Resistance) on Monday revealed that he’s read it too, and it’s akin to Geraldo Rivera hyping the opening of Al Capone’s (empty) vault on live TV.

That’s funny … Rep. Mark Meadows read the same memo and called it “absolutely shocking.” Rep. Trey Gowdy didn’t offer an analogy when asked by Fox News about the contents of the memo, but he certainly did paint a picture without disclosing any specifics:

Yes, we want it to come out, even if Lieu considers it a big nothingburger. The thing is … if it really is analogous to Capone’s empty vault, why are Democrats crafting their own memo to counter the release of this one? Rep. Adam Schiff at first opposed the memo’s release, but now that it looks like it’ll be made public, Democrats on the committee have written their own memo.

And don’t forget, Schiff and Sen. Dianne Feinstein even urged Facebook and Twitter to investigate if Russian ‘bots were behind the #ReleaseTheMemo campaign … even though the memo’s apparently a big yawn.

And remember this hot take from Resistance leader Scott Dworkin, who hadn’t had access to the memo, but nonetheless said people asking for it to be released were “traitors”? Hey Rep. Lieu, you might want to give Scott a call and talk him down from the ledge.

It’ll be interesting to see, then, who votes how.

If a Democrat votes to release the memo, does that make him a traitor?

He must not.

Regardless of the contents of the Nunes memo, one thing’s for sure: the media will be spinning this one hard.
