Hakeem Jeffries does not want to talk about the Democratic Socialists of America. I noticed. The second the House starts circling an anti-socialism resolution and DSA starts defending Hasan Piker like he is a union steward with a ring light, the minority leader sprints to a podium and starts yelling about Laura Loomer.
That is not leadership.
That is a fire drill.

But that doesn't make what Hakeem is trying to do here any better.
I can say that without pretending Jeffries suddenly discovered moral courage. He discovered a shiny object. Nixon is a DSA-backed Florida Senate nominee who just knocked off the establishment pick. Jeffries would rather turn her into a victim than explain why his party keeps nominating people from a group that wants to defund the police, abolish ICE, and treat the Senate like a suggestion. This is the Jeffries special.
When the brand is on fire, change the subject. Don’t talk about open borders. Don’t talk about the streamer DSA calls “ours.” Don’t talk about candidates who run as socialists in the primary and capitalists on television. Point at Loomer. Demand a denunciation. Hope the cameras follow the smoke.
I am not here to defend Loomer. Truth be told, I don't think she would want me defending her anyway.
But I am here to notice the dodge. If your party is being eaten alive by people who think America is the problem and you respond with a 12-second clip about a professional provocateur, you are not standing with public servants. You are hiding behind them.
Hakeem can keep pointing at Loomer all week. The DSA problem is still sitting in his caucus, smiling, waiting for November.
