Mehdi Hasan was so angry that the owner of a local restaurant said we are in a recession that he took to Twitter to not only trash the restaurant owner as some sort of uninformed doofus, but he wrote an entire thread about how misinformed everyone else is and that our economy is just fine.
In other words, he was upset that someone who is literally living in the reality of this recession said as much and doesn’t think the restaurant owner is smart enough to understand that we’re not in a recession.
Or something.
We only snagged the first tweet which he has since deleted …

But you know, vibes.
What an elitest toad.
Sorry, restaurant owner who is seeing inflation damage his business, you’re just too stupid to know better. Helluva take, Mehdi.
To my critics:
1) yes, inflation is high. Inflation does *not* equal *recession*.
2) yes many people are still struggling in America. They always have been. That’s *not* a recession. And if you care about struggling Americans, join me in backing M4A and a higher minimum wage.

Silly poor people, this isn’t a recession. Mehdi says so.
And look at that … if you care about struggling Americans vote for MORE of these horrific policies that are destroying the country.
Holy Hell.
Raising the minimum wage, does he really think that will help the local restaurant owner? LOL
imagine being the idiot who doesn’t understand that increasing the minimum wage will negatively impact the business owner he claims to care about and understand.

Tweeps were less than impressed.
Being pedantic about the definition of recession doesn't change the fact that people are hurting and perceive us to already be in recession.

Inflation means that most Americans are suffering. The government may not declare this as a recession but it is for most of us

Guy dying on the street: “This nuclear war is killing us”
Medhi: “Actually sir, it’s the nuclear FALLOUT that is doing the damage. SMH”

A small business owner doesn't need a lesson on economics to know they are struggling financially. Pointing out the difference makes no difference to their bottom line.

People dragged Medhi so much he finally deleted the thread and ‘sort’ of apologized. Not sure, ‘My bad,’ really covers being a total douchebag about struggling Americans …
Ok I give up. Having been dunked on all weekend for using a badly-told personal anecdote to try & make a point about how widespread misinformation about the economy is right now, which made me come across to some as out-of-touch & insensitive, I deleted the tweet thread. My bad.
— Mehdi Hasan (@mehdirhasan) June 12, 2022
Mehdi, you didn’t come across as out-of-touch and insensitive, you ARE out-of-touch and insensitive.
And no amount of deleting threads or tweets and making lame apologies will change that.
I do think we should be able to point out that there isn’t a recession, that inflation doesn’t equal a recession, & that the US economy is performing well on jobs and growth, without being accused of being Marie Antoinette, but still, that’s on me as a communicator to do better.
— Mehdi Hasan (@mehdirhasan) June 12, 2022
He’s the real victim, guys.
People accused him of being Marie Antoinette and all he was doing was trashing people who are struggling for not understanding that they’re not really struggling, they just think they are.
Or something.
And they wonder why we make fun of them.
