We guess this was Vox’s contribution to our Trans Day of Visibility, although it was an odd take the week that the mainstream media tried to cover for a transgender “man” killing six people at an elementary school in Nashville. The Daily Mirror did a piece on Audrey Hale’s “whimsical artwork” and said she could have been a children’s book illustrator if she hadn’t just killed three 9-year-olds. CBS News said a day later they were still working to confirm Hale’s gender identity, and NBC News’ Ben Collins wrote a piece about Hale that completely avoided pronouns, referring to the shooter only as Hale, never “him” or “her.” They wouldn’t want to misgender the child-killer in death. ABC News’ Terry Moran wasted no time connecting the shooting to Tennessee’s ban on “medical care” for trans minors. And just about everyone did a piece on how the trans community, which was planning a Trans Day of Vengeance for today, was living in fear of reprisal.
Vox is still upset about the New York Times taking a “both sides” approach to trans issues. Remember when the Times published this piece?
Educators are facing new tensions over whether they should tell parents when students socially transition at school — changing their name, pronouns or gender expression. https://t.co/FnMHIYBPcl

Libs went crazy. GLAAD published a statement denouncing the Times’ “misguided, inaccurate, and disingenuous ‘both sides’ fearmongering and bad faith ‘just asking questions’ coverage.” Rep. Rashida Tlaib complained that the Times “has been providing a platform for transphobic hate and propaganda, with horrifying consequences.” How dare the Times acknowledge the “other side”?
Vox is apparently still mad about it and claims that the legacy media has been bowing to the “anti-trans movement.”
Why can’t journalists move beyond “just asking questions” about trans identity? https://t.co/FAncXmabkA

Aja Romano reports:
Now add to this murky existential territory all of the insidious myths that circulate about the modern trans movement: that trans kids are transitioning at alarming rates, that trans activists are pushier and angrier than ever, and that doctors with a scary agenda are forcing risky, dangerous medical care on unsuspecting children and parents. It might be easy to believe such reports; after all, major, reputable media outlets like the New York Times have been publishing journalism arguing these very concerns.
As far as trans health care is concerned, however, the medical consensus is well-established: Nearly a dozen major medical associations, including the World Health Organization, the American Medical Association, and the American Academy of Pediatrics support and recommend gender-affirmative care.
Yet the specific arguments about this care that make it into many mainstream media outlets result in stories that undermine the experts, stemming not from legitimate concerns but from a larger orchestrated push by the far right to mainstream transphobia.
…
The anti-trans movement likes to frame these issues as concerns, particularly for trans children. If more people understood and accepted that being trans, even at a young age, is a valid, legitimate thing, that framing might make fewer inroads with the mainstream. But unfortunately for trans kids, instead of validation, there’s confusion and pushback over trans identity. The handwringing, combined with the rapid rise over the last decade in teens who are openly exploring their gender identities and the media’s willingness to air transphobic fearmongering, has opened the door for a well-orchestrated moral panic.

Give us a break with this s**t.
"Mainstream publications treat what should be understood as a fundamental human rights battle more like a semantic 'debate.'"
Imagine believing that mutilating and sterilizing children is a human right. Vox gonna Vox. https://t.co/PxVxvOaEiq

The basic premise of the piece is that any journalism about trans issues that isn't outright pro-trans propaganda is bad, and that therefore all journalism about pro-trans issues should be pro-trans propaganda. That's not meant to convince anyone, it's a profession of faith.

The science and medicine around transitioning someone who has not entered puberty is still very much evolving. There's a reason that the pharmacologic agents used in transitioning are being used off-label and aren't FDA approved for that indication (and probably never will be).

Line used to be "Imagine explaining to your grand kids that some people were against gay marriage."
Imagine what our grandkids will think reading about the moral panic in favor of sex-changing surgeries on minors.

Can someone name one “right” not afforded to a trans person that is for any other person? I’ve never heard a right be articulated. Just raw emotions and screaming accept me to people.

Isn’t it a journos job to ask questions and not just accept the narrative presented. Should any other group be afforded this lack of curiosity or is it reserved for the trans community

No wonder there is growing backlash. For a community of less than 3% of the population every article, every news story, every day of this or that is about trans people. I think most are getting fatigue.

Plenty of articles about Audrey Hale, check those out.

The Times does one piece about the dilemma educators face about telling parents when their kids declare themselves trans at school and it’s still getting blowback from liberals. Seriously: Vox thinks the “anti-trans movement” has taken over the media.
