First, a warning: Don’t get started on Touré and the n-word — he’s proclaimed that calling him the n-word is threatening his life; it’s verbal violence and might justify killing.
But now the n-word includes LGBTQ folks and other marginalized groups, and “woke” is as good as saying the n-word. We’ve heard that conservatives stole the word “woke” from blacks, among whom it was a compliment that you were enlightened. And now conservatives like Bethany Mandel are “weaponizing” the word to cause harm.
To this editor, “woke” means to be on the bleeding edge of left-wing progressivism. Is that a slur? Well, yeah. But the woke keep calling Hispanics “Latinx,” which a lot of Hispanics have called a slur.
At this point woke is a slur. The way the right uses it is an undercover way of saying "those people," or "non-white people." It's a polite way of saying the n-word but in this case the n-word includes Blacks, LGBTQ folks, and other marginalized groups.

You woke clowns are getting desperate.
— JWF (@JammieWF) March 15, 2023
Ridiculous.
— Robert T. Ives (@Justalurke) March 15, 2023
Sorry, but leading the “woke” charge are white liberals and it’s not even close. You can try and make this about racism to shut down discussion all you want but it’s not going to work.

No. It has nothing to do with color of skin, but, rather, a person's view of human nature. Tragic or Constrained vs. Utopian. Respect for US Constitution vs. Cultural Marxism. Have a nice day.
— Sissy Willis (@SissyWillis) March 15, 2023
The vast majority of people who consider themselves “woke” are white.

I’m glad you found another way to feel victimized. Better that than personal accountability
— Dan Stringer, SEC Pimp (@Danstringer74) March 15, 2023
This is your take by default on just about every issue. The truth is – however vague the definition of woke is, most folks picture an angry, middle aged white person (usually female) trying like hell to fit in when they hear the word.
— Ed Gallagher (@ejgallagher1) March 15, 2023
Nah, woke bullies come from all backgrounds, thereby invalidating your claim about what the word refers to. You may just be desperate to wave a hand and magically stop people talking about merit, and not practicing faux victimhood activism on behalf of groups they don't speak for
— yuvilio (@yuvilio) March 15, 2023
Why is it a slur, though?
What happened between 2014 (when the word was resurrected) and now that it describes terrible people doing terrible things based on a terrible worldview?
— AmishDude (@TheAmishDude) March 15, 2023
Here we go. Gonna change woke to something else and then attack anyone that uses the word woke. Classic.
— WayKoolJr (@MillerLatte) March 15, 2023
Nah, this isn't even remotely accurate. Pretty much every time I use the term woke, I'm talking about white people with pink/blue/purple hair who screech their pronouns at me or some such nonsense.
— High-Caliber Gentleman (@HighCaliberGen1) March 15, 2023
No. You don't single-handedly get to determine the definitions of words. That's very woke of you.
— GoHeelsOG (@heels121212) March 15, 2023
“Woke” people do seem to control the language — they’re the white liberals who decided that you should capitalize Black but lowercase white so as not to appeal to white supremacists.
As far as this editor is concerned, “woke” means automatically adopting the most left-wing position on any issue. Like Dove trying to be woke by criticizing actor Brendan Fraser for wearing a fat suit instead of gaining 600 lbs. It has nothing to do with race.
