Daily Caller fact-checks Snopes piece on FEC complaint against Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez

Wow, the mainstream media really picked up and ran with that explosive allegation that Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and her chief of staff Saikat Chakrabarti could be facing jail time following an FEC complaint that two PACs founded by Chakrabarti funneled over $1 million in political donations into two of his own private companies.

Ocasio-Cortez didn’t want to talk to reporters about that complaint, instead tweeting that it was a conspiracy theory and the FEC complaint was “bogus.”

Fact-checking site Snopes decided to write up a piece on the alleged conspiracy theory, but Andrew Kerr at the Daily Caller has fact-checked Snopes’ reporting and found it lacking.

Kerr writes:

Snopes writer Dan MacGuill falsely claimed in his story that Chakrabarti, who served as executive director of Justice Democrats, “was not an official agent or officer” of the PAC. He also failed to acknowledge the fact that Chakrabarti and Ocasio-Cortez are members of the PAC’s three-member board of directors, according to archived versions of the Justice Democrats website and corporate filings obtained by The Daily Caller News Foundation.

Archived copies of the Justice Democrats website reveal Ocasio-Cortez and Chakrabarti held “legal control over” the PAC starting in December 2017, and that Chakrabarti was one of its “major players” up until January 2019.

Ocasio-Cortez and Chakrabarti continue to serve as “governors” of Justice Democrats, according to the PAC’s filings with the Washington, D.C. Department of Consumer & Regulatory Affairs.

Come on … with her economics degree, Ocasio-Cortez certainly wouldn’t lose track of a million dollars in campaign donations.

It’s OK if she’s occasionally (often) “factually wrong” as long as she’s “morally right.”
