Lying About Abortion Laws Puts Women's Lives at Risk

AP Photo/Rogelio V. Solis

One of the most insulting and abusive things the Left does is lie about anti-abortion laws. They've done it at least twice with Georgia's abortion laws, most recently when a brain-dead woman was kept on life support until her unborn son could be delivered. That was done under GA Code § 31-32-9, which states a doctor can't remove a pregnant woman from life support unless a) she has an advanced directive to do so or b) the fetus is not viable. The woman, Adriana Smith, gave birth to a son named Chance -- who was very much wanted by her family, by the way.

If the anti-abortion laws were as dangerous to women's health as the Left claims, they wouldn't have to make up horror stories about those laws that are easily debunked. Yet time and again, they lie to push their anti-woman, pro-abortion agenda.

Here's more from the Atlantic, and see if you can spot the problems:

After Kaitlyn Kash delivered her baby daughter at Austin’s Ascension Seton Medical Center in July 2023, she began hemorrhaging. Her doctor told her that her placenta had not come out of her body as it should have after the baby was delivered and that she would need a D&C—a procedure that removes the contents of the uterus.

Kash consented, but then, she told me, nothing happened. “Are we going to the operating room?” Kash kept asking. She started shaking and vomiting. Hospital staff took her newborn daughter off her chest.

After about 45 minutes, Kash was wheeled to the OR—where, she said, she faced more delays. “People were running around, and there was slamming of cabinets,” she told me. The staff didn’t seem prepared. Kash remembers thinking that she was going to die, that she would never get to name her daughter. She struggled to speak, then passed out.

So, to recap: Kash gave birth to a baby. She retained parts of her placenta and needed a surgical procedure to remove it and stop the bleeding.

She was taken to the operating room less than an hour after consenting to the procedure, where it was completed.

So the Atlantic is lying on several fronts. Kash was no longer pregnant, so abortion laws do not apply. A dilation and curettage (the D&C) is a common surgical procedure, not an abortion, and Kash received that procedure.

The Left has been pushing to expand the definition of abortion. Last November, an ophthalmologist argued that any procedure that ended a pregnancy -- including the three c-sections I had to deliver my sons -- is an abortion. Other Leftists argue that any procedure involving the uterus -- like the cysts I had removed in 2004 -- is an abortion. By that reckoning, I've had four abortions. Now, I wouldn't take obstetrics advice from an eye doctor or a Leftist who thinks women can have penises, but that's just me.

The nefarious little game here is clear: by classifying anything related to the uterus as an abortion, the Left can cast a wide net to write articles like the one in the Atlantic that makes the misleading claim that a D&C is an abortion limited by Texas anti-abortion laws.

This will, of course, harm women more than help them. But the Left doesn't seek to help women: it wants us to kill our babies. Without proper oversight. Without proper follow-up care. And without any post-abortion assistance for the women who suffer mental, emotional, and physical trauma from killing their unborn children.

I also have to wonder this: how many doctors who say these things are truly ignorant of the law, and how many of them are being intentionally obtuse? Because the pattern here seems to tell me something must be done to clarify anti-abortion laws so doctors fully understand them or investigate the doctors who might be putting women's lives at risk for their political agenda.

Whatever the reason, it's beyond time to end these lies and protect women and children from the actual horror of abortion as opposed to the fictional harms the Left dreams up and publishes in the Atlantic.
