It's a tough political landscape for Republicans right now. Gas prices are high, grocery prices are even higher, and as the saying goes, it's the economy, stupid. As a result, Democrats look poised to take the midterms in a massive blue tsunami.

Voters have short memories. They were fed up with Joe Biden, so they gave President Trump another shot. Now they're exasperated with Republicans and seem ready to hand power back to Democrats.

I get the frustration. Too many Republicans aren't delivering on what they promised, and the change doesn't feel fast enough. Trust me, I get it. I'm a voter staring down the nearly impossible task of choosing Florida's next governor after Ron DeSantis. I hate the prospect. I'll still show up and vote for the Republican, though, because any Democrat in charge would be worse for me and my family.

Not that long ago I would have called this hyperbole. Not anymore. We don’t have to guess what a Democratic return to power looks like. We already watched it under Biden or whoever was actually running the White House.

The border gets thrown open again. Two years of ICE enforcement get wiped out in a matter of months. Expect special treatment for activists whose politics start and end with “Free Palestine.” Medicaid starts covering “gender-affirming” procedures almost immediately. School choice gets stalled or strangled wherever they can reach it. Then comes the structural play: pack the Supreme Court, push statehood for D.C. and at least Puerto Rico, and lock in a map that makes a Republican national majority nearly impossible for a generation.

That’s not a protest. That’s handing them the tools to destroy this country forever.

We have a responsibility to keep political ideologues away from America’s kids.

So vote and vote Republican. Hold your nose if you have to. Buy yourself a coffee or a sweet treat afterward if it helps. If this year’s candidates disappoint you, repeat “at least they’re not beholden to people like Barack Obama” and cast the ballot anyway. Sitting it out doesn’t punish the party you dislike. It just gives the win to the one that will do more damage. Things can still get worse.
