CNN’s Erin Burnett Looks Into 'Multiple' Sailors Trying to Go Overboard on the USS Abraham Lincoln

CNN

We were ready to take this story seriously until we saw that it had been picked up and run with by CNN's Kaitlan Collins. Now we're not so sure. According to a piece published earlier this week in The Military Times, sailors on the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln have been trying to commit suicide by jumping overboard. The carrier has been deployed for more than eight months while supporting U.S. military operations in the Middle East against Iran, and the deployment, which was expected to end in May, has reportedly been extended.

Natalie Oliverio reports:

Annabelle Loma has spoken with her husband only a few times since he attempted to jump overboard from the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln during his current deployment.

Communication has been difficult to come by, and he is now on medical hold.

Loma, who lives in San Diego, said her husband had been repeatedly overextended before he tried to jump from the carrier.

“He’s scared,” Loma said. “He thinks he’ll get a dishonorable discharge, and just because he was burnt out, his 13-year career is ruined, just like that. That’s not fair, that’s not right. That’s not what he should be worrying about right now.”

Loma said she initially received a call from the ship’s ombudsman after the incident but has not heard from anyone with the Navy in recent weeks.

CNN is doing what it can to make it a national scandal.

"… her husband is actually doing.”

First, how many is multiple? "The Navy did not provide a precise number of sailors who have attempted to go overboard or engaged in self-harm aboard Lincoln during the current deployment," Oliverio reports.

The original story gives three examples of attempted suicides.

So, what do we actually know? The Military Times talked to the wife of a sailor who attempted suicide and the wife of a man who allegedly stopped another sailor from going overboard. They've been deployed since November. Deployment was supposed to end in May. It's August now. Is it the extra three months that are driving "multiple" sailors to attempt to jump overboard?

Remember, this is the same CNN that just reported that police are investigating after a black woman was found hanging from a tree in Mississippi, without bothering to mention that her black boyfriend was arrested. We need more information than CNN is giving us.
