Email: Assistant principal collecting money from staff to pay off student's coyote?

This is one of those posts that doesn’t seem to pass the smell test, except everything about the email looks legit. It looks like it was sent by Mount Pleasant High School Assistant Principal Stefani Harvey (she/her/hers) regarding “an urgent matter to support one of our own students here at Mount.”

It reads:

We have a student who came to America with “Coyote”, which is a group that helps people. This group gives you a time frame to make a payment of $5,000 to those, who bring them into the states.

Our student needs our urgent support to raise another $2000 to meet his goal of $5000 by February 1, 2023.

The school is collecting money to pay off the coyote who smuggled the kid into the U.S.?

This could have serious federal criminal law implications and any teacher who receives this email should immediately notify the union as to how to deal with it. They may have an obligation legally to report it to the police. @AGNeronha

The principal of Mount Pleasant High School in Rhode Island then sent an email to all faculty and staff saying "the nature of the request is not appropriate."

I called the school about the vice principal who was raising money for a human trafficker. I wanted to know if the police are involved and how common this is. The person who responded refused to give her name, said they are investigating themselves, and hung up the phone.

Not a scam. If you don’t pay by a certain date, they kill you and your family in the other country. Guarantee that principle didn’t want the cartel/coyote to show up at school. Still not right of her to ask for money for a smuggler. My uncle is border patrol.

I’m no lawyer but I think this falls into the category of participating in a crime in which a student is the victim, and failing to report that a student is in danger.
