Sen Elizabeth Warren recently tweeted, “Let’s be clear: President Biden has the legal authority to cancel student debt.” Generally, anytime someone starts a sentence with “let’s be clear,” whatever follows is going to be a lie. A couple of weeks ago a “MAGA” judge (according to Sen. Chuck Schumer) halted the implementation of President Biden’s student debt “cancellation” plan that was clearly a ploy to get midterm votes. The case went to a federal appeals court, which issued a nationwide injunction temporarily barring the Biden administration’s student loan debt relief program.
Now that the midterms are over we haven’t heard Biden talk a lot about student debt cancellation, which would cost Americans something like $400 billion. That’s even more than we’ve sent to Ukraine.
Congressman Mondaire Jones says he’s a lawyer by trade, and Biden absolutely does have the authority to cancel student debt, no matter what those far-right, activist judges say.
