Some people suspect that some of these teachers posted by Libs of TikTok aren’t really teachers. How many pieced, tattooed, pink-haired non-binary teachers are out there anyway? We just did a post on Media Matters wanting Twitter to do something about the “groomer” slur, but as we pointed out in that post, these teachers so often see parents as the problem and themselves as the solution: “I’m your parents now,” and “I’m your mom now.”
This teacher says that once her second-grade class found out that a student had come to them with their pronouns, all of them changed their pronouns. And the real shame is that they have to hide this from “unsafe” adults like their parents. Teachers always see themselves as the “safe space” for the students in their classes.

Young children do not have the capability to look outside of themselves for their issues. When someone supposed to be teaching them makes something like this a big issue, they tend to internalize that fear/ideology themselves on a personal level.
That is what occurred here. https://t.co/EdYBf1xAv0

Groomer. Period.

Totally not a social contagion though

The entire class, huh? And she took a bunch of 8 yr olds seriously? How are these muppets allowed in a classroom?

‘Unsafe’ adults? Second grade students have no clue about pronouns, so the only one unsafe is this teacher!! Stop making our children think about things they should not be!! Let them be children for Lord’s sake!

The entire class? I doubt that highly.

Every time my school hires a just-out-of-college teacher, the optimistic part of me thinks, "Oh yay, new blood" and the part of me that Twitter has numbed thinks, "Oh God I hope it's not one of those."

Seriously, guys. 90%+ of us go in every day just hoping the copy machine doesn't jam and we don't get severely sunburned during yard duty. If you have time for all this other BS, you're not doing your actual job effectively.

I know this is gonna sound crazy but when i was in school pronouns were part of a sentence and they actually just simply taught me how to use them properly in said sentences.

Here's a thought. 2nd graders are impressionable.
What are the chances we could stage an experiment, convince a class that it's cool & trendy to claim XYZ about themselves & see how many go along with it.
Wouldn't mean XYZ is true. It merely means you convinced them to agree.

Yep. “Who wants to change their pronouns!”
Because second graders NEVER try to please their teachers by copying them..nope, never…🙄

Just to be fair (although I don’t think she really deserves fairness) I think she’s saying that one kid changed his pronouns and all the other kids started using the “right” pronouns for that kid. Still warped that anyone is talking about it in second grade though.

The question isn’t why don’t your students “feel” safe changing their pronouns, the question is why does your entire second grade class “feel”they need to!!

It's a game to them.
