We’re not sure if NowThis shot this video before or after learning that Scarlett Johansson had dropped out of a film about a trans man “in light of recent ethical questions raised,” but in either case, trans culture critic E. Oliver Whitney explains why Johansson playing the part would have “erased a marginalized community.”
Scarlett Johansson just backed out of playing a trans person after widespread backlash — listen to trans person @cinemabite explain why the outrage was justified pic.twitter.com/SMvHaf8hWe
— NowThis (@nowthisnews) July 13, 2018
The outrage was justified for a number of reasons: Johansson was putting trans actors out of work while at the same time putting trans people at risk of violence by promoting the idea that being trans is nothing more than a change of clothes.
If only trans people can play trans roles than only people who aren't trans get to play every other role. https://t.co/iUlnkEuJq4

I love it when they think they are making an identity politics slam dunk but end up throwing a total brick.

Jared Leto seemed pretty legit to me. Must have been all GOOD ACTING.
— Lex Luthor Reigns (@HannibalKrueger) July 13, 2018
And never once after watching that did I think “oh so trans is just a guy wearing a dress and pretending to be a girl.”
For a community arguing for inclusivity, this stance sure smacks of elitism.

By that logic Eric Stonestreet should be dismissed from his role in modern family bc he’s not actually gay. It’s called acting for a reason.

Everybody wants equal rights until they don't agree with something. Why can't u just be happy that they're bringing a transgender story to the big screen? Instead of crying about the lead, why don't u petition the studio to let you help so you make sure they get everything right?

actors acting is unacceptable.

He says, "Being trans is not an acting exercise." Seriously? ??

I’m sick of actors playing soldiers do you know how many ex servicemen are out of work, its an outrage they are not portraying a realistic image of life in the services, ACTING IS ACTING BEING SOMETHING YOUR NOT INCLUDING BEING A MAN, WOMAN OR OTHER GENDER…

Dude they’re “actors”, they pretend to be something they’re not. This stuff is mandness. This is the kind of crap that is going to get trump re-elected

You should be so lucky as to have a megastar like Johansson portray you. She will attract a far larger audience to your cause. Congrats, no one will probably goto see the movie (assuming it's made), now that you've tainted it with your BS.
— Ragnar Danneskjöld (@RagnarsRed) July 14, 2018
Unlike race, every trans person is born a different gender, & their equipment situation varies– so your demand is based on genitalia which we'll never see on film and isn't consistent in the community. A film that could have brought tolerance killed by the angry radical left.

Can people name me the trans actors with more acting experience and better acting resumè that should get job ahead of her? And list some of movies they have been in?
— Gary Knight (@Garyknight84) July 14, 2018
Well, the film just won't get made. It needs a star. There is no transsexual star. So congratulations.

Now the film probably wont be made and you'll complain there's not enough representation in Hollywood.

I’m all for non-binary LGBTQ rights but this is silly. Scarlet woulda made this HUGE. Ya make a nice explanatory video but simultaneously just condemned what COULD be a giant step forward & forced it to local movie houses where no one will see it. Boo
