There’s a lot you can do if you own a gun and yet want to do something entirely symbolic and not at all helpful in stopping school shootings.
You can saw it in half, saw off the barrel in a half-baked attempt to “destroy” it, chuck it into a campfire in a campaign commercial, or just turn it in to the police, who will properly destroy it (or perhaps auction it off).
Friday’s school shooting in Texas was apparently the last straw for former porn star Mia Khalifa, who decided that she’d not only surrender her rifle to police for destruction but donate its value to Everytown.
I’m turning in my gun to the police today and leaving my gun rack empty, just like the beds of all the lost children. I’m not against the 2nd ammendment, I am against the untimely deaths of children.

I will be donating the gun’s value ($1,500) to the @Everytown organization. Having it doesn’t make me feel safer, but relinquishing it does make me feel like I’m setting an example. Every small action matters. #DoSomething

They couldn’t have made it easier. Thank you, @Austin_Police for picking up my weapon for safe destruction. This may not effect anyone but, but it’s symbolic. If all of us were to #DoSomething small, eventually it will add up and change the world. pic.twitter.com/sgnT70aigE

We’re not sure how an infinite number of purely symbolic gestures like this will add up to changing the world, but like we’ve said before: if you own a gun and for some reason don’t believe you should, by all means, get rid of it.
Do anything, just #DoSomething @Everytown pic.twitter.com/s07KCT60kK

So … we’ll give Khalifa points for admitting that her gesture is symbolic and won’t affect anyone.
This cool gesture will do nothing to actually prevent these incidents from happening again other than make you feel good about yourself https://t.co/NaiBPNjDrd

I am happy when people turn their guns in, if they really think their guns could be used in a negative way (not for self-protection or target practice) then I really don't want them having firearms. Note that NRA members aren't the ones going on killing sprees. https://t.co/0vCWpihIFY

Guns don’t kill people, bad people kill people… getting rid of your gun won’t change the fact that there are really messed up people out there that will do these type of things… https://t.co/Egv9jSKm6z

A law abiding citizen turning in a gun does nothing to prevent gun violence. Criminals don’t abide by the law, remember that. ??♂️ https://t.co/xOQSeWboCg

Today is a colossal victory for people who really care about their public image…oh wait.
Also, how the hell does a Remington 870 cost $1,500? https://t.co/cZiZYrjx1Q

If you don’t turn in your guns to the police you don’t care about dead kids? That message will totally resonate https://t.co/tFLU47t8cu
