Never mind what else Attorney General Jeff Sessions said in his address to the National Sheriffs Association winter meeting because the press had already decided how this one’s going to play out by picking out the quote it knows will stir up the hornets’ nest.

Can we pause for a moment to give some credit to CNN, which actually explained in its piece that “the concept of the office of sheriff — being an independent, elected law enforcement entity — originates in Anglo-Saxon England.” In other words, the heritage of the sheriff’s office very literally is Anglo-American … not “white.”

Hey, Google it:

The sheriff is unique to that shared legal heritage. Before reporters sloppily imply nefarious meaning behind the term, we would suggest that they read any number of the Supreme Court opinions that use the term. Or they could simply put ‘Anglo-American law’ into Google,” [DOJ spokesman Ian] Prior said.

But by all means, let’s go with the “full white supremacist” angle.
