Florida Sheriffs Association votes unanimously to support Stand Your Ground law

The Dream Defenders today spent their 25th day occupying Florida Gov. Rick Scott’s office in an effort to have the state’s “stand your ground” legislation repealed, while the members of the Florida Sheriffs Association reaffirmed their support for the law with a unanimous vote.

FSA president Grady Judd issued a statement on behalf of the organization:

The right to self-defense is well-established in law.  The Florida Sheriffs confirmed this position by voting unanimously, at the 2013 Florida Sheriffs Association Summer Conference, to support the Stand Your Ground law as it is currently written.  Our current judicial system is comprised of multiple checks and balances to ensure fair and equitable application of all laws, including Stand Your Ground.

Scott met with the leadership of the Dream Defenders in the first week of their occupation and defended Florida’s law, referring to a study conducted by the state’s Task Force on Citizen Safety and Protection.
