Texas Democrat Gene Wu urges Republicans to push for school vouchers as hard as they can

Remember last summer when a bunch of Democratic Texas state representatives fled the state for Washington, D.C. in order to prevent the legislature from voting on election reforms that they knew they couldn’t win? And when 22 of the runaway Democrats filed a lawsuit alleging “anxiety and distress over the separation from their families”? Out of that bunch, Rep. Gene Wu sort of made a name for himself as a Twitter celebrity, starting off by posting photos of his “first meal as a fugitive”, a salad in a styrofoam container.

We’d kind of forgotten about Wu, but he thinks he’s on to a winner here: He wants Republicans to push as hard as they can for school vouchers.

Hey Republicans,

Push for VOUCHERS. Push as hard as you can.

Make it a litmus test for Republican candidates running for office.

Trust me, there no easily foreseeable consequences that will bite you in the ass for taking this stance.

There are going to be people who may try to tell you that the CORE of the TEXAS GOP voter base resides in the deep rural areas where there is already little tax-base to fund schools and no private schools.

Those people are ninnys. Don't listen to them.

Other people might tell you that, suburban Republicans still mostly send their kids to public schools. And, if public education is further defunded, either property taxes go up to make up the gap or public schools will suffer.

Those people are dummies.

Don't worry that Texas already is in the middle of a teacher exodus crisis in public schools. Further reducing school funding will mean that … err … they can pay teachers more. That math checks out.

Just know that Abbott and Patrick want it.
