A lot of people are parading the idea that Inspector General Michael Horowitz’s report proves that criticism of the FBI’s alleged political bias “was all lies” (James Comey, who’d know about lies) and “exonerated” Comey and the DOJ (CNBC media cheerleader John Harwood).

NBC News Justice Correspondent Pete Williams even made Mediaite for his take that the FBI “screwed up at every level.”

Mediaite reports:

NBC News justice correspondent Pete Williams said on Monday that the Justice Department’s inspector general found the FBI “screwed up at every level” in using the salacious Steele dossier to obtain a FISA warrant against former Trump campaign aide Carter Page.

… “What it says is the FBI basically repeatedly screwed up at every level, failing to pay enough attention to potential problems with Steele and failing to tell the Justice Department … The IG report says the FISA application was inaccurate, incomplete, or unsupported. It says, for example, that the FBI failed to look at some of the problems in Steele’s past work but that was never sufficiently addressed.”

What’s not so odd is that some of the biggest players in this drama, like Comey, seem perfectly happy with the inspector general’s conclusion that they were just making the sort of workplace mistakes we all make that led to 17 significant “inaccuracies and omissions” in the four FISA warrant applications.

Dana Loesch and others think “screwed up” is still a very nice way of summarizing the IG report.

And just like with the media, notice how the mistakes and screw-ups always seem to go in one direction.

So there you have probably the most critical take we’ll hear from the mainstream media today — an NBC News correspondent saying the FBI and DOJ “screwed up.”
