'Gow Chicka Wow Wow' University of Wisconsin Fires Chancellor for Appearing in and Producing PORN

AngieArtist

The University of Wisconsin has fired Chancellor Joe Gow. Normally this would not be worthy of a Twitchy article, BUT the reason Gow says he was fired led to a lot of free speech and right-to-privacy questions.

Yes. You read that right. Joe and his wife make and produce pornographic videos. So to be clear, he and his wife are not just filming it and watching it between the two of them. They are filming it, appearing in it, producing it, and marketing it. Gow says his firing violates his First Amendment right to free speech.

Does it though? I don't think so.

Gow says because he never mentions the University or his role in the videos that he should be able to do whatever he likes as long as it is between consenting adults and they should not be able to fire him because he has the right to free speech. We agree that Gow has a right to free speech BUT the University has the right to fire him if he has not met some of the expectations set out for holding the position of chancellor.

In the article, it states the University of Wisconsin President Jay Rothman said 'The chancellor serves at the pleasure of the regents'. The regents along with the President voted unanimously for Gow's removal. The regents stated they desire a chancellor to be a good role model and practice good judgment. They put Joe making porn in the category of poor judgment and bad role model behavior and they seem to have every right to fire him.

The article goes on to state that Gow had already been reprimanded in 2018 because he used $5,000 of student fees to pay for a porn star to speak at the University. It seems to me that Gow is not only participating in porn but also trying to promote it and the culture from his position as chancellor.

Don't get me wrong, I do not care if you do porn, watch porn, or if you avoid it at all costs. You can do anything you like as long as it does not harm another person or their property. Gow can also do any of those things. Where Joe ran into problems is the fact that in the position as CHANCELLOR, his face and who he is became a representation of the University. The University is not telling him he can not watch or produce any more pornographic videos with his wife. They told him he could not appear in and produce pornography and still be the chancellor at UW-La Crosse.

That is just setting rules and expectations for a job. Those expectations should have been set and listed up front. They probably were vague about it but after the 2018 reprimand, Joe should have taken the hint.

If you work at a fast food joint and the manager says if you are late 3 times you are fired then if you are late 3 times, you get fired. If you want to be chancellor at UW-La Crosse you can't appear in or produce pornography. This is not hard. There is a porn joke there but we are going to leave that up to you.

This is not a free speech issue, it is a simple question of whether or not Employers have the right to expect certain things from employees. It can be a slippery slope. It can risk some overstepping of privacy boundaries.

An employer should NOT be able to tell you what to think or how to act outside the work environment in general. They can not tell you how to vote. However, if the position sets some rules UP FRONT and advises you to follow a code of conduct or states you are a representative of them even outside of your official capacity on the job, such as Disney Channel actors, you probably can not go and put your face front and center on the cover of 'Meet Joe's Junk' and then try to sell it.

We submit to you that Joe should leave quietly and just go push out some more porn. Let UW-La Crosse find someone to represent them while making the expectations of the position clear and concise.

We agreed. Hence the BEST headline we have written this week.

Go be respectable, or don't. Heck go make some porn and turn a buck, we don't care, but make sure your face and your character are not representing your employer and it is not written in any contracts or by-laws before you do it. :)
