Apparently Facebook and Instagram will punish you 'for false information' if you post this quote from American revolutionary Thomas Paine [pics]

Quillette managing editor Colin Wright recently posted a Thomas Paine quote to Instagram … and Instagram subsequently removed it:

"False information" according to Instagram. pic.twitter.com/162ypIQcnT

“False information”?

Received DMs from several people who tried to repost it saying theirs got immediately taken down too. Give it a try and report back.

Here’s one of many people who have had a similar experience to Wright’s:

How many more people are being punished by Facebook and Instagram for doing nothing wrong?

People are still getting their posts removed on Instagram, and on Facebook they're getting 24-hour suspensions for sharing that post. 🤡

— Colin Wright (@SwipeWright) December 27, 2021

You’re kidding.

— NicoleBehnam.eth (@NicoleBehnam) December 28, 2021

Nope. Browse the comments. It's still getting removed on Instagram and Facebook is issuing 24-hour bans for posting it. 🤨

This is it? the graphic?

— Cathy Young (@CathyYoung63) December 27, 2021

That’s it. The graphic.

Yes.

— Colin Wright (@SwipeWright) December 27, 2021

A graphic quoting an American revolutionary and philosopher is “false information.” Sorry, we’re just really struggling to wrap our brains around that.

Because it’s insane.
