Emily Atkin writes about climate for the New Republic. Which automatically makes her an expert and de facto scientist and if you disagree with that, then obviously you’re a sexist.
No, really. After Atkin pimped a New Republic piece by climate change alarmist Eric Holthaus about a developing storm off the Louisiana coast:
The scary storm system developing off Louisiana's coast couldn't have come at a worse time—and it's a sign of things to come in our warming world, @EricHolthaus writes in his TNR debut: https://t.co/l7dB7KuIHD
— Emily Atkin (@emorwee) July 10, 2019
Ryan Maue, who has a Ph.D. in meteorologist, suggested that Atkin and Holthaus were maybe jumping the gun a bit in blaming the storm on climate change:
The storm hasn't even been named & already it's being blamed on climate change? https://t.co/fhjxfkBMHn
— Ryan (@RyanMaue) July 10, 2019
Atkin took that as a personal affront, and she responded accordingly. With a personal swipe at Maue:
please learn to read.
— Emily Atkin (@emorwee) July 10, 2019
And that’s when things really started heating up:
I'm still learning the big words.
It's narrative building time!— Ryan (@RyanMaue) July 10, 2019
Atkin didn’t waste any time building her narrative.
love to talk about narrative building with the Reasonable Meteorologist Who Totally Doesn't Deny Mainstream Climate Science But Is Just Simply Asking Questions
— Emily Atkin (@emorwee) July 10, 2019
Don't listen to actual experts.
Just go with the fearmongering.

That’s not some clever Photoshop job on our part. She really tweeted that.

Let’s take a closer look at that action, shall we?

— Tom (@BoreGuru) July 10, 2019
Yes, someone with a PhD in meteorology knowing more about hurricanes than a blogger with a journalism degree must be sexist. It’s the only explanation. https://t.co/KXQfJrVtFq
— Derek Hunter (@derekahunter) July 10, 2019
This is emblematic of today’s discourse. The guy literally has a PH.D in meteorology and is being framed as a sexist because he had the audacity to disagree with a female reporter. Not all criticism or disagreement is sexist, racist, etc etc. Good grief. https://t.co/JQra0ZSPUI

Mayor: I need a storm threat assessment, NOW!
Sec: I’ve got the NWS on line 1.

Sec: Dialing Jeffrey Epstein.
M: Nooo! A woman journalist!! https://t.co/723of1Wgxn

If Emily’s climate journalist gig ever falls through, she’s got a promising career as an accidental comedian.
He is a meteorologist and you have a degree in journalism, so yeah, pretty much ?♂️
— (((Elliot))) (@ElliotE33) July 10, 2019
You're arguing with an actual scientist.
— Stephen Miller (@redsteeze) July 10, 2019
Actually, yes.
Because he's an actual scientist.
You're not. https://t.co/c5KGle7mSx

Careful … with talk like that, you’re liable to trigger her again.
That is correct. You are not a meteorologist. So your opinion matters not. You are a “journalist”, so write what the Scientist tells you. https://t.co/F9Il6eszTh
— Mickey White (@BiasedGirl) July 10, 2019
Imagine thinking that this is what journalists are supposed to do. https://t.co/dxK0ZghNmx
— Emily Atkin (@emorwee) July 10, 2019
Yeah! Just imagine thinking something like that! Wait, what?
Yes. Imagine that. Journalists doing their job, not editorializing on every piece. https://t.co/qcdo69gckp
— Mickey White (@BiasedGirl) July 10, 2019
Hey now. That’s crazy talk. Ryan Maue is just some “random guy with a science degree” who said some things on Twitter. It’s not like he’s been on the climate beat for 5 1/2 years like Emily has.
A random guy with a science degree said something on Twitter, so I’m going to repeat it as if it’s the truth, and ignore the fact that hundreds of other scientists have told me the opposite!
— Emily Atkin (@emorwee) July 10, 2019
Bless her heart.
Ryan Maue is not a global climate change denier, BTW. Not even close.
— Gadfly With Me (@NathanWurtzel) July 10, 2019
Now you're lying.
Because what Ryan said is what hundreds of other scientists would tell you.
You were wrong.
Stop digging. https://t.co/7b4GP7KmCj
— RBe (@RBPundit) July 10, 2019
Can’t stop, won’t stop.
Neither of those things makes you an expert on hurricanes. Stop using your gender as a shield to protect you from criticism.
— Amber Athey (@amber_athey) July 10, 2019
Ok amber. Gender aside, I published an article by a meteorologist, and a meteorologist attacked it by saying I’m not a meteorologist. That is dumb.
— Emily Atkin (@emorwee) July 10, 2019
Actually, what’s dumb is willfully ignoring that said meteorologist is correct about you not being a meteorologist. And crying sexism over it.
Also, both things actually do make me an expert! on *knowing what the cumulative body of hurricane experts say about hurricanes.* it is astonishing to me that you know so little about what is obsensibly supposed to be your own profession.
— Emily Atkin (@emorwee) July 10, 2019
You clearly don’t know what the cumulative body of experts say on hurricanes. Ryan is right on that, you’re wrong. Read the IPCC, NOA, etc.
— Mike Bastasch (@MikeBastasch) July 10, 2019
Hey, stop attacking her, you guys:
So a bunch of Daily Caller reporters are relentlessly attacking my feed and sending hundreds of trolls my way because I dared to say that 5 1/2 years of covering climate change and hurricanes made me an expert on those things.
How’s your guys’ days going?
— Emily Atkin (@emorwee) July 10, 2019
Oh, they’re also attacking me because I said being a female climate journalist is hard sometimes because male scientists attack your credibility when you don’t agree with them.
It’s a really good day!
— Emily Atkin (@emorwee) July 10, 2019
Anyway, I’m gonna mute my feed temporarily because there is *a lot* of hate coming my way! But just wanna say I stand by my own expertise, and the fact that male scientists are often super demeaning to female journalists. Ok bye!
— Emily Atkin (@emorwee) July 10, 2019
It’s good that she stands by her “own expertise.” After all, somebody’s got to.
No….. It has nothing to do with your sex dear. You're arguing with an actual scientist. Not everything is misogyny. But hey, you be you.
