John McCain is still waging a valiant battle with brain cancer, but he’s reportedly making funeral plans in the midst of his fight. And his plans apparently don’t include Donald Trump:

More from the Hill:
Those close to Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) have told the White House that their plan for the Arizona Republican’s eventual funeral is to have Vice President Pence attend — but not President Trump, The New York Times reports.
The funeral is expected to take place at the Washington National Cathedral, according to the Times.
But Trump, with whom McCain has had a tempestuous relationship, is not expected to attend the service, at least not according to current planning, the Times reported.
It shouldn’t come as a shock that McCain doesn’t want Trump at his funeral. Trump has denigrated McCain repeatedly, even going so far as to insult McCain’s military service and mock his heroism as a POW. McCain and his family are certainly within their rights to want to limit funeral guests to those who have actually demonstrated respect for McCain.
But Turning Point USA founder and executive director Charlie Kirk, for one, apparently doesn’t think McCain should get to make that call. So he’s taking a page from Trump’s book and impugning McCain’s character:

But he wants Obama there
That tells you everything you need to know about McCain https://t.co/fJ6FEEDy4z

And what’s that, Charlie? That John McCain, a war hero who risked his life while Donald Trump fought his own “personal Vietnam” by avoiding STDs, can invite whoever he damn well pleases to his funeral?
It’s literally his funeral. Who cares who he invites?

You’re seriously wondering why he doesn’t want the guy who said “I prefer people who weren’t captured” at his funeral?
— Neoliberal ? (@ne0liberal) May 7, 2018
Maybe McCain just does not want to hear about a WITCH HUNT or how unfair the media is, at his funeral.
— The Reagan Battalion (@ReaganBattalion) May 7, 2018
Why are you complaining about who McCain wants at his own damn funeral?
Trump is a despicable dirtbag and an utterly contemptible person. Trump dissed the Vietnam POWs, including McCain specifically.
McCain is absolutely right (and within his rights) to not invite Trump.

You don’t have to like John McCain or agree with his policies to know that Kirk’s swipe is nasty and uncalled for.
The guy is literally dying. There are some things bigger than politics. Let the guy have some peace in his final days.

Last word to Jonah Goldberg, who absolutely nails it:
I have political disagreements — from quibbles to more significant — with John McCain. But all of these self-described conservatives using the man’s funeral wishes to piss on his whole life just to prove their love of Trump are debasing themselves. It’s grotesque.
