After Stephen Hawking passed away earlier this week, “Wonder Woman” actress Gal Gadot tweeted this:
Rest in peace Dr. Hawking. Now you're free of any physical constraints.. Your brilliance and wisdom will be cherished forever ✨ pic.twitter.com/EQzSxqNTuN
— Gal Gadot (@GalGadot) March 14, 2018
Little did she know that her lovely tribute to the celebrated physicist would turn out to be so problematic:
Gal I love you but this is really ableist ?

His wheelchair is a tool of freedom. His disability was not a tragedy.

Can all y’all that aren’t disabled NOT speak over disabled people on this. Her tweet is ableist. Period.

I think you’re fantastic Gal but this tweet is very ableist. His physical constraints didn’t stop him from changing the world. People with disabilities don’t wish for death to be free of their challenges. We wish to be valued for what we CAN do, not pitied for we can’t.

Gal I am chronically ill. Can't shower or even get myself out of bed. Lost 18 years thus far. But I ran a charity funding research for my illness #ME and advocate for Change. All from my bed. Is my life not important? Disablement is not shameful, bigotry is. Watch @unrestfilm pls

Plz know that wheelchairs propel U forward they do not leave one behind. He did quite a bit in that mobility aid & lived 50+ years *after* being diagnosed w/ALS. Perpetuation of this negative worldview is harmful since it often translates to adverse policy measures and attitudes.

we all know she meant well, that doesn't mean she shouldn't educate herself more on disabilities and ableist language.
— crafty lil pidge (@ramendates) March 15, 2018
implying that disabled people are only truly free once they die is incredibly ableist and ignorant, no matter how good the intentions.
— crafty lil pidge (@ramendates) March 15, 2018
Thank you "Wonder Woman" for that completely ableist comment. Being disabled is not a restraint, he is one of the greatest minds in the world AND he was disabled. It did not RESTRAIN him. So disappointed people think this way. ???
— Aimee Talbot ?????♀️ (@Bunnyaimee) March 15, 2018
Even when she attempts to come across as deferential and sincere (qualities that don't come naturally to a murderous psychopath), she still manages to be extremely ableist and vile. A true rotten apple.
— FIGHT WAR, NOT WARS ??? (@RadioScouse) March 15, 2018
This is very offensive to disabled people I suggest u delete this… So ridiculous
— khanyisa (@nobuzana) March 15, 2018
Has the world gone mad? Not entirely, thank goodness:
People are actually getting mad about this? She is literally saying “You are free from this world, you can be at peace with NOTHING HOLDING YOU BACK.” How the hell did you guys interpret a “Rest In Peace” message to be a bad thing?
— no ragrets (@ryanjespiritu) March 15, 2018
This world is way too politically correct! It's a beautiful tweet, Gal. If we choose to argue about everything people say, no one will say anything at all for fear of exactly this.
— Dorian Louis (@DorianLouis1847) March 15, 2018
Ms @GalGadot, ignore the bitter snark, Your sentiment was heartfelt and sincere.. I have a minor disability (blind in one eye) and believe me I would be happy to be free from that physical constraint, while living needless to say (smile)
