'Sum Ting Wong': Local news channel reporting on Asiana crash gets punk'd — hard [video]; Update: NTSB blames intern

We have a feeling San Francisco’s KTVU is gonna be haunted by this one for a quite a while:

Now this is good reporting. #KTVU read these off as the "confirmed" pilot names on #Asiana crash. @ktvu good job pic.twitter.com/UjlOfIecab

One word: Painful.

Ladies and Gentleman, this actually aired on KTVU moments ago in regard to the Asiana crash. pic.twitter.com/Ind2IhX9Bt #KTVU

@KTVU You should look a bit closer at your so called pilots' names you aired.. :/

— Monica Pisciotta (@MEANIKAA) July 12, 2013

@KTVU really? Can you take a real good look at these names and tell me these are legit? Sound them out. U got trolled pic.twitter.com/1qj5QpQwpf

saw on KTVU that the Captains name of the Asiana flight that crashed is Sum Ting Wong…I feel like I just got Punk'D.

@KTVU And who confirmed the pilot names, pray tell? Unbelievable that no one in the chain caught that.

— Suzanna B. Stinnett (@Brainmaker) July 12, 2013

Sum Ting Wong, @KTVU? Ho Lee Fuk you should be embarrassed and feel sorry for disrespecting the crew of #Asiana214. http://t.co/hc0gAOrFZx

Whoops #ktvu!

— Stacy Tiffin (@tacert) July 12, 2013

I have a hard time thinking the #KTVU video naming the pilots was a fake/spoof. Someone has some 'splainin to do.

Update:

Interestingly, the four names read by the KTVU anchor appeared in a tweet this past Wednesday:

Asiana just released the crew's names…
Capt. Sum Ting Wong
Capt. Wi Tu Lo
First Officer Ho Lee Fuk
First Officer Bang Ding Ow

— Erikalonglegs&clutsy (@longlegsnograce) July 11, 2013

KTVU has since apologized:

Uh oh. RT @PoliticoKevin: KTVU apologizes for the fake names, but says an NTSB official confirmed them: http://t.co/bGfppHLVEn

— David Freddoso (@freddoso) July 12, 2013

Update:

The NTSB released a statement blaming a summer intern for confirming the names KTVU read on air.
