RIP Janet Reno: Nation's first-ever female attorney general has passed away, she was 78

Former US attorney general under President Bill Clinton, and the first female AG, Janet Reno passed away Monday after fighting Parkinson’s disease for 20 years.

She was 78.

Reno had a somewhat controversial career, especially serving under Clinton. When she took office in 1993 the Waco standoff was already in progress. At the end of her time as attorney general, she was involved in the controversial Elian Gonzalez immigrant case; she did eventually order the raid that sent Gonzalez back to Cuba.

She passed away at her home in Miami.
