Wait, what?

First @burgerking, then @jeep…now @mtv? It's a bad day for big brands & social. But wondering: what is the goal of the hacks??
— Kirsten Wright (@kirstenwright) February 19, 2013
No, not really. Burger King and Jeep were recently hacked. Pitiful Viacom tried to get in on the attention-action by “hackings” of MTV and BET Twitter feeds. Here is a tip for you, MTV. When planning a fake hacking, don’t, you know, announce it.

Isn’t she just precious! And check out the “hacked” tweets.
We’re bringing JERSEY SHORE back!!! #MTVhack
— BET (@BET) February 19, 2013
Kurt Loder to host #VMAs & @hiphopawards this year #MTVhack
— BET (@BET) February 19, 2013
ON A SCALE OF 1 TO RATCHET, HOW MUCH BETTER ARE THE @BET AWARDS THAN THE VMAS??? #MTVHACK
— MTV (@MTV) February 19, 2013
MMM. THIS BURGER TASTES GOOD!!!!!!!!!! #MTVHack
— MTV (@MTV) February 19, 2013
#BETEXPERIENCE: http://t.co/6Lf112yx #MTVHACK
— MTV (@MTV) February 19, 2013
The accounts then proceeded to retweet a bunch of “OMG, MTV has been hacked” tweets like this.

And then this happened.
We totally Catfish-ed you guys. Thanks for playing! <3 you, @BET. 😉

Lame.
Bad idea for @MTV to fake a hacking as a PR stunt. Brands need to cultivate a positive emotional association & no one likes feeling foolish.
— Sarah Warn (@sarahwarn) February 19, 2013
Plus, you know, lame. Is that what passes for hip and edgy these days? How sad. Twitter users prove a new adage: All publicity (and any lame attempts therein) is mockable publicity!
@BuzzFeedAndrew @MTV should get hacked so it will be forced to actually play *gasp* music videos again.
— LifeNews.com (@LifeNewsHQ) February 19, 2013
So @MTV & @BET faked hacking today to gain followers which totally stole my idea from yesterday.

Your Twitter hacking news: @Jeep got hacked for real & it was stupid; @MTV faked being hacked & it was VERY stupid. http://t.co/RegM8MOt
— Manolith (@manolith) February 19, 2013
Instead of faking Twitter hacks, perhaps @BET & @MTV should stick to what they do best, playing terrible music / none at all (respectively)
— Michael Grosvenor (@MGrosvenor) February 19, 2013
@oxJONEZxo @JackalAnon remember when @mtv was about music. Now its about "no one finds me important enough to hack so i do it to myself"
— Nick Farrell (@KittyCommando) February 19, 2013
Heh. And guess who actually scored big? Denny’s.
OMG we hacked ourselves because it's the cool thing to do! http://t.co/RNJ7REen
— dennysdiner (@DennysDiner) February 19, 2013
We live in a world where @DennysDiner is cooler & more clever than @MTV
— Stephen Gutowski (@StephenGutowski) February 19, 2013
@collegepolitico @MTV welcome to the future.
— dennysdiner (@DennysDiner) February 19, 2013
Take a page from Denny’s book, Viacom!
These are social media pros that GET it. RT @DennysDiner: OMG we hacked ourselves because it's the cool thing to do! http://t.co/NQEPjvjG

Great response to recent Twitter hackings RT @DennysDiner:

Bravo! And yes @MTV, you're lame RT @DennysDiner: OMG we hacked ourselves because it's the cool thing to do!http://t.co/icrCvcM2
— (((Human Capital Stock))) (@Hwoodpolitix) February 19, 2013
Yeah, twitter. RT @DevinePorkRind: I think the important question here is, "Why isn't @DennysDiner a @verified account?"
— dennysdiner (@DennysDiner) February 19, 2013
And, instead of attempting lame publicity ploys, why don’t you try this?
Remember when MTV actually played music videos?
— Stumbler Top (@StumblerTop) February 19, 2013
So @MTV and @BET pretended to be hacked in order to get attention. Here is a better idea: Just start playing music videos again.
— Not Bill Walton (@NotBillWalton) February 19, 2013
We’d say don’t quit your day jobs, but you apparently don’t even do those. Fail, MTV and BET. The big winners? The mockery-loving and Denny’s.
I think @DennysDiner wins Twitter for the day with this bit of clever hilarity – https://t.co/QrbUwWus
