You may get the impression I have decided to take on the medical beat at Twitchy lately. I've been writing about issues surrounding our American medical schools, student doctors and residencies for a few days now. Today, there is a new dimension to this tale. The federal government is investigating several medical schools for racial discrimination.
Breaking News: The Trump administration is investigating the admissions policies of three major medical schools, taking aim at the heart of scientific authority in the U.S. https://t.co/9Cw758UvlE

The Trump administration has opened investigations into admissions policies at three major medical schools, expanding the federal government’s pressure campaign beyond campus culture and taking aim at the heart of scientific authority in the United States.
The Justice Department on Wednesday informed Stanford University, the Ohio State University and the University of California, San Diego, about the investigations and demanded that the schools turn over extensive lists of data by April 24 or risk interruptions to essential federal funding, according to two administration officials familiar with the inquiries and documents reviewed by The New York Times.
The government is seeking information about medical school applicants from each of the past seven years, including test scores, home ZIP codes and any familial relationships to alumni or ties to university donors. The administration also demanded copies of any internal messages at the universities about diversity, equity and inclusion and any correspondence between school officials and pharmaceutical companies about admissions policies.
“At this time, our investigation will focus on possible race discrimination in medical school admissions,” Harmeet K. Dhillon, the Justice Department’s assistant attorney general for civil rights, wrote in each of the letters.
Across all medical schools, about 1 in 4 enrolled black/Hispanic medical students had a below-average MCAT score.

Only 3% of white/Asian students did.
A vast preferential treatment exists in admissions to almost every med school. Three schools isn't even the iceberg tip. https://t.co/3I2yhyiqGz pic.twitter.com/CgtqJ5G7iG
Why is it so hard to treat American students the same and ensure all American students get the residencies they want?
Let's be honest though: most people really don't want a merit based system.

If they did, they'd be ecstatic about the match for residency system, one of the best merit based systems out there.
But they aren't. Weird, right? https://t.co/2lud1MvkEi
People want a merit based system for AMERICAN medical students. We want the system to be applied equally for American students since it's subsidized by American taxpayers. https://t.co/bwY11kUOnR

People want merit but they don't think American students should have to compete with every medical student around the globe to attend an American school subsidized by American tax dollars. By the way, I believe students who are legal immigrants with citizenship or residency status should be considered in the same group as American students.
We want the best Americans. There are real cultural issues associated with foreign doctors. When I was an intern I had an attending who none of the patients could understand. After rounds I would have to go around again and reexplain everything because they couldn’t understand…

It shouldn't be this difficult to protect and strengthen our medical education system for American students. We should be encouraging more Americans to pursue medicine, rather than assuming the only solution to our doctor shortage is importing labor. Of course, there's always room for talented foreign doctors—America is a great place to live. But we must also make the profession appealing to our own people. That's essential for the long-term well-being of Americans.
