Football playoffs, candidates declaring their intentions for 2016, and even certain Twitchy posts have people pining for SMOD (aka the Sweet Meteor of Death). It looks like they may have to wait a little longer.
I'll be rooting for #SMOD next weekend in the AFC Title Game….

The latest candidate for SMOD, Asteroid 2000 BL86 looks like it will be a disappointment for these people. It will come very close to Earth but it will not release us from having to endure campaign 2016, the next über-feminist wave of outrage, or Neil de Grasse Tyson’s Twitter feed.

Looks that way, but no. The experts are telling us that it will be close enough to spot with your telescopes.
2004 BL86's safe flyby on Jan 26 is closest by any known #asteroid this large till 2027 http://t.co/z1ZoGXW0T2 pic.twitter.com/LYZhInSjY9

@NASA @AsteroidWatch That #Asteroid looks pretty close! Where will the moon be? Is it safe?
— Gerad13 (@imitator13) January 14, 2015
@imitator13 @nasa Yes, the moon is absolutely safe from asteroid 2004 BL86, as is Earth.
