Apparently, he didn’t have the weapon at the airport:

UPDATE: still working to confirm details with police, but looks like the WMD was not at the airport.

The FBI is investigating:

Update. It was a “homemade pipe bomb”:

And it sounds like the friend was going to use the pipe bomb on a neighbor, but changed his mind. Then the air traffic controller ended up with it, according to the lates police report:
