Emmanuel Macron addressed the riots and protest in France today in part by making some announcements, and one of which was to encourage companies to hand out year-end bonuses:

Macron pushing back hard against "president of the rich" image. Announces "social and economic state of emergency", trails reforms to boost salaries, a crackdown on tax loopholes and a tax-free end of year bonus for all employees. Stick broken, it's carrot time.

#French President #Macron announces small rise in minimum wage, an end to tax on overtime & calls on employers to pay staff 1-off year end bonus. Will it calm anti-gvt sentiment? #YellowVests pic.twitter.com/G4Rmg1yjM4

Macron also tried to diagnose the root cause of France’s problems with something that might sound kind of familiar:

A “malaise” speech? That really rang some bells for many, and not in a positive way for Macron:
Maybe this sounded better in French. https://t.co/bpwR8k3gfA

Ha! Yeah, maybe:
Oh my goodness: Macron has decided to channel Jimmy Carter. https://t.co/Q3zVgDAVuL

Usually people don't channel Jimmy Carter in the midst of a crisis. https://t.co/JTVRBV5Fxu
