'Democrat voters are racist?' Joan Walsh's praise for Mary Landrieu's southern voter 'truth' backfires

In an interview with NBC News, incumbent Louisiana Sen. Mary Landrieu was asked why President Obama is having a hard time in the state. Landrieu answered this way: “I’ll be very, very honest with you. The South has not always been the friendliest place for African-Americans. It’s been a difficult time for the president to present himself in a very positive light as a leader.”

Salon’s Joan Walsh wondered if this is confirmation of Landrieu’s claim:

Kudos to Landrieu for truth about many white Southern voters. Why did Obama get 40% less white Southern support than Gore in 2000?

Those numbers might be confirmation of something, except it might not be what Walsh has in mind:
