Just as a refresher, the uproar over “Harry Potter” author J.K. Rowling seems to have started here, with her use of the hashtag #IStandWithMaya. That would be Maya Forstater, a British woman who was fired from her job for tweets deemed anti-trans. The anti-trans tweets in question? They dared to state that “there are two sexes, male and female” and “it is impossible to change sex.”
Dress however you please.
Call yourself whatever you like.
Sleep with any consenting adult who’ll have you.
Live your best life in peace and security.
But force women out of their jobs for stating that sex is real? #IStandWithMaya #ThisIsNotADrill— J.K. Rowling (@jk_rowling) December 19, 2019
That’s what got Rowling “canceled” — tweeting that sex is real.
There followed plenty of pieces in the media about what “Harry Potter” fans should do … burn their books? Order a copy from a bookbinder who was custom-making “Harry Potter” books with the author’s name removed?
Now there’s the problem of “Hogwarts Legacy,” an upcoming video game set in the “Harry Potter” universe. Is it OK to buy?
From someone who was literally a poster child for the Hogwarts School Choir at Universal Studios… if I can not buy Hogwarts Legacy, so can you. It really is that easy. This was one of the best, most memorable parts of my life, but JKR is harming people I care about. pic.twitter.com/X0BpNHNiP0

I love HP and it's world. Idgaf about the author, I don't follow her or the drama. Politics aside, I will be enjoying a game that I pre-ordered because of it residing within the HP fantasy world that saved me when I was a kid, going through dark times.

Rowling is “actively harming” trans people? How?
Explain “actively harms”.

I'll be buying many copies. For myself of course and then as gifts for everyone in my family. You're welcome.

I’m genuinely confused… how does someone buying a video game harm any people?
— Tony (@CMHAuthor780) January 16, 2023
I didn’t realize there was someone taking donations 🙄

You realise she’s already made her money from the game and boycotting it won’t accomplish anything.

Beyond cringe.

I’ll buy it for myself and gift you a copy.
