WA Department of Health says transmasculine persons with a cervix should get screened

Back in 2019, HuffPost did a piece on the fear and discomfort some trans women with male genitalia felt seeking out gynecological care. The problem is that the medical field has not kept up with the science. “The medical field in general still falls short of providing proper care to transgender patients,” HuffPost revealed. “Deadnaming, improper pronouns and a general lack of knowledge about transgender issues lead many from the trans community to avoid the doctor altogether.” And what about trans men? “As a man, will getting in the stirrups for an exam make me feel like a girl?”

The medical field has made some progress over the last few years, and the Washington Department of Health is advising transmasculine persons with a cervix to look into getting a cervical cancer screening.

This is actually the first time we’ve come across “transmasculine.” From what we’ve learned from the Genderbread Person, it would be a person whose biological sex is female but whose gender identity is transgender and whose gender expression is masculine.

Men can get cervical cancer — just one thing we’ve learned during Cervical Cancer Awareness Month.
