Los Angeles mayoral candidate explains that he's not white, he's Italian

It’s been an interesting week in Los Angeles politics. As Twitchy reported, Los Angeles City Councilwoman Nury Martinez was caught on leaked audio describing fellow council member Mike Bonin’s black son as “parece changuito” or “he’s like a monkey” and saying of Los Angeles District Attorney George Gascon, “f**k that guy, he’s with the blacks.” The story caught the attention of President Joe Biden, who said “they all should step down … the language that was used … was unacceptable, and it was appalling.”

Race is in the headlines again in Los Angeles, as mayoral candidate Rick Caruso explained during a debate that he’s not white, he’s Italian.

NBC News reports:

In bringing up that topic, Telemundo anchor Dunia Elvir stated: “The next mayor of Los Angeles will be either an African-American woman or a white man.”

“I’m Italian,” [Rick] Caruso interjected.

Elvir responded, “Italian American,” as Caruso insisted that his racial identification be stated on his terms.

“That’s Latin, thank you,” Caruso said.

So is he Latinx, or just Latin?
