As Twitchy reported, the Florida House on Thursday passed a bill that would eliminate the special district, created back in 1967, that allows the Walt Disney Co. to self-govern Walt Disney World. Charles C. W. Cooke called it “grotesque” that the DeSantis administration would pick now to tighten the screws on Disney after it had already won the Parental Rights in Education battle, and that there was no need to “salt the earth.” It looks like Gov. Ron DeSantis and the Florida legislature are salting the earth anyway.
Sam Stein of Politico and MSNBC sees a butterfly effect at work — what was the ripple that is now a tsunami hitting Disney, and how did it get that way?
What was the butterfly flapping its wings moment behind the Don’t Say Gay bill in Florida? Obviously, someone/something sparked this ripple which turned into a wave which turned into a tsunami that now is hitting Disney. But what/who was it?

He asked, Twitter answered:
The moment the collective decision was taken by the media to refer to it as the "Don't Say Gay" bill.
Flap flap. https://t.co/XyMKT3LPqs

You can vehemently oppose or strongly support the bill and/or Disney. I'm uninterested in whether you do or not, b/c it's immaterial; it should be obvious to both partisans and purely disinterested observers that the moment the media meme'd it all the rest followed ineluctably.

Let me show my work: once the MSM (and Twitter activists, the crossover as always is hard to pinpoint) started the klaxons about DESANTIS doing DON'T SAY GAY (and in those specifically reductionist sloganeering term, nuance begone), several reactions were inevitable…
— Jeff B. is *BOX OFFICE POISON* (@EsotericCD) April 21, 2022
Twitter/activists would get all aflutter -> heat generated leads to MSM heat, doubled by DeSantis's nat'l politics angle -> activist pressure intensifies by their standard play, lobbying corporations, hence Disney. Then the one unpredictable move: Bob Iger opening his yap.
— Jeff B. is *BOX OFFICE POISON* (@EsotericCD) April 21, 2022
I think Bob Chapek really wanted to sit this out. But Iger sounding off like the ex-chairman he is –> emboldens activists inside Disney plus media outside –> forces Chapek's hand (he probably is personally on-side anyway) -> Disney goes public against the bill, etc. etc.
— Jeff B. is *BOX OFFICE POISON* (@EsotericCD) April 21, 2022
CEO Bob Chapek had to write an apology to his employees for not speaking up sooner against the “Don’t Say Gay” bill, and they still staged a walkout even after an all-hands meeting to assure them that Disney was supportive of LGBTQIA+ messages in its entertainment.
Anyway by that point we're long into the snowboulder-rolling-down-hill phase of things. And now everyone's just lashing out or making opportunistic plays. But the snowball first starts rolling when you call it Don't Say Gay because it's snappy and clever and oh-so-demeaning.

The moment you started misrepresenting it as the "Don't say gay" bill probably
— BritCard (@LoftusSteve) April 21, 2022
Maybe it was the propagation of a lie by journalists who branded legislation Don't Say Gay even removing the scare quotes?
— Blame Big Government (@BlameBigGovt) April 21, 2022
Couldn’t be the mislabeling and false assessment of the bill. But I’m sure you don’t see it that way Sam.
— Storm (@S0SickRick) April 21, 2022
Um, maybe it was an entire body of people – led by the media and politicians – lying about it, which landed it at the door of Disney, who for some reason decided they needed to bend a knee to the mob? How did you miss this?
— Social Distance Champion (@realchrishynes) April 21, 2022
What it was? That trying to shield 6-8 years olds from adult content in school was treated by media and Disney as controversial when the controversy should have been that the bill covers so few ages.
— Yossi Gestetner (@YossiGestetner) April 21, 2022
"…the Don’t Say Gay bill in Florida…"
You just can't stop lying.
The lies about this legislation began immediately, and they continue apace, including right there in your tweet.
— J.G. Petruna (@jgpetruna) April 21, 2022
What’s this “Don’t Say Gay” bill you speak of? A bill by that name does not exist.
— Steven 🇺🇸🇮🇹🇻🇦 (@SFlipp) April 21, 2022
Nor does one exist that has that effect
— (((Aaron Walker))) (@AaronWorthing) April 21, 2022
It's a mystery wrapped in a riddle propelled by advocacy journalism.
— Kaiser Bill (@WaivedSAP) April 21, 2022
Hmm … what was a common-sense bill got turned into something called “Don’t Say Gay” which pressured Disney into interjecting itself where it had no business to intervene. Disney picked this fight.
