A white teenager shoots three white men and all of the hot takes are about white supremacy and how white supremacist Kyle Rittenhouse shot down whites who were protesting (i.e., rioting) in the name of racial justice. There must be a way to work Donald Trump and January 6 into all of this, and CNN found a way to do it — by publishing an analysis by John Blake about how it’s angry white men, not black men, who are the most frightening figures in America.

Blake writes:
There is nothing inherently violent about White men, or any human being.
But recent events have convinced me it’s time to put another character on trial: A vision of White masculinity that allows some White men to feel as if they “can rule and brutalize without consequence.”
This angry White man has been a major character throughout US history. He gave the country slavery, the slaughter of Native Americans, and Jim Crow laws. His anger also helped fuel the January 6 insurrection at the Capitol.
It’s this angry White man — not the Black or brown man you see approaching on the street at night — who poses the most dangerous threat to democracy in America.

We have enough problems with White male violence as it is. Mass shootings in the US are committed more often by White men than by any other group. White male anger has become one of the most potent political forces in contemporary America. That anger helped a White man win the White House. Trump’s rise to power is inconceivable without his ability to tap into White male anger and embody it.

The Associated Press Style Guide was revised in the summer of 2020 to capitalize Black but leave white in lowercase to avoid “subtly conveying legitimacy” to white supremacy. The Washington Post and it seems CNN have broken with the AP and decided to capitalize White as well. Brown? Sorry, still lowercased.

Blake focuses on three trials to make his point but fails to mention the angry white males who rioted last summer and held a federal courthouse under siege for months — probably because they were all released and none of them went to trial. We’d argue that angry white liberals in Portland are the ones we should be wary of.
